![]() ![]() We recently came into contact and have begun to work together more. I do pay attention to fashion, but I do tend to mix things up based on inspiration.Īre there any brands that are special to you? One of my favorites is Rad Hourani, who's from Montreal. Here, we spoke to Thundercat about his fashion inspirations, what Michael McDonald is like as a person, and his new album.ĭo you pay any attention to fashion trends? It's a combination. ![]() On tamer days, he'll just wear, you know, a wolf fur on his head with some beaded necklaces and Visvim sandals-this guy is clearly having fun with his style and his music, to absolutely mesmerizing effect. (Washington and Tyler, incidentally, are also two of Thundercat's friends.) His performance wear contains multitudes, from handmade hats by Gunner Foxx to a custom-made Dragon Ball Z costume. His vibe is somewhere between full-on shaman (think Kamasi Washington) and Technicolor streetwear king (Tyler, the Creator). Thundercat brings the same eclectic style that defines his music to the clothes he wears. Lyrics like "I wish I was a cat.I would scare off everything" and a highly relatable song about being hungover and losing your wallet provide the laughs while, get ready, Michael McDonald- Michael Motherfucking McDonald-lends his signature melodic voice to one of the album's best songs. Thundercat, whose friends include off-kilter comedians like Eric Andre, Hannibal Buress, and new-wave jazz star Robert Glasper, found a way to meld absurdist humor with beautiful musical arrangements. Drunk is a fantastic album musically, but it also has the added value of being arrestingly funny. While Thundercat's music hasn't quite reached Zeitgeist status, rap nerds may already know him from Kendrick Lamar's album To Pimp a Butterfly (to which he lent some of his unmistakable funky-ness), or from his own growing catalog-this month he released his third solo album, Drunk. It takes a special kind of guy to play the six-string bass-and some serious skills to write good songs around it-and Thundercat, a 32-year-old bassist from Los Angeles, might just be the best in the business. ![]()
